ASSIGNMENT 3 PORTFOLIO

DUE 25 SEPTEMBER 2024

1. Fluency is one of the five essential components of reading.

1 .1 Explain what is meant by reading fluency.

According to the DBE (2011:18),

Reading fluency refers to the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with proper
expression. It involves not just the mechanical act of decoding words but also reading in a
smooth and natural manner that enhances comprehension. Fluent readers can recognize
words automatically, which allows them to focus on the meaning of the text rather than
getting bogged down by individual words. Fluency bridges word recognition and
comprehension, helping learners understand what they read more effectively. (Hlalethwa
2013).

Key elements of fluency include:

 Accuracy in decoding
Correctly pronouncing and identifying words.
 Reading speed
Reading at a pace that supports comprehension.
 Phrasing and expression
Using appropriate intonation and pauses, which helps convey meaning.
 Comprehension: Understanding the text while reading.
Fluent reading allows learners to enjoy and engage with texts without significant effort,
promoting both enjoyment and comprehension.

, 1.2 Discuss why fluency in reading is important.

Fluency in reading is crucial because it serves as a bridge between word recognition and
comprehension. When learners can read fluently, they spend less time on decoding
individual words, allowing them to focus on understanding the meaning of the text. This
enhances their ability to absorb information, which is essential for academic success.
Fluent readers are also more likely to enjoy reading, as the process becomes smoother
and more engaging.

And more to that, fluency improves learners' confidence, encouraging them to tackle
more complex texts. As a result, they develop better reading habits and improve overall
literacy skills.

What does fluency in reading involve?

The ability to recognize and pronounce words correctly.
Reading speed and rate at which learners read, allowing for better comprehension.
Being able to recognize words automatically without hesitation.
Phrasing and expression with appropriate tone, stress, and intonation to reflect the
meaning of the text.
Understanding the meaning of what is read while maintaining accuracy and speed.

1.4 Plan TWO (2) activities and explain how you will use each activity to improve the
fluency levels of reading of Grade 3 learners. Your activities must be an original
effort.
Activity 1: Echo Reading This activity improves reading fluency by helping
with Expression Cards learners develop accuracy and expression. When
repeating the teacher's reading, learners practice
correct pronunciation, phrasing, and intonation. The
use of expression cards encourages learners to focus
on reading with appropriate emotional emphasis, which
enhances their comprehension and enjoyment of the
text. Echo reading also helps learners internalize the
