= the process of using an organisation’s goals and strategy to forecast the organisation’s
human resource needs in terms of finding, developing and keeping qualified human
resources


Can be divided into 3 phases:
Phase 1: Identify the work being done in the organisation
 Work is done by employees who are appointed to specific positions (jobs) with the
purpose of executing those tasks associated with that position


Job analysis
 1st step in HR planning = det the nature of the work being done
 Job analysis = the process by which management systematically investigates
the tasks, duties and responsibilities of a job within an organisation
 Manual labour – observation incl videotaping, audiotaping and electronic
monitoring
 Administrative work – interview with employee
 Questionnaires can also be used to det the tasks performed by employees


Job description
= written format listing the contents of the job
 Job title, purpose of the job, what the position holder will have to do, how the
job must be done and under which conditions etc.
