Human Geography Section B Questions Aqa
A level
Explain the Concept of Place - Location - Where a place is on a map; its latitude
and longitude coordinates.

Locale - Each place is made up of a series of locales or settings where everyday
life activities take place. These settings help to forge values, attitudes and
behaviours.

Sense of Place - The subjective and emotional attachment to place.

A city can be a location, with various neighbourhoods serving as locales within
the city. Each of these locales may have its own unique sense of place, with
different qualities that distinguish it from other areas within the city.

Place Experience - How an area is portrayed can demonstrate how someone feels
about an area and impact the way you in turn feel about an area. Places evoke
different emotions for different people.

Explain the Importance of Pace in Human Life - Identity - Place is often important
in the construction of our identities. This is often particularly strong at the local
level, as this is where we have spent much of our lives.

Global Sense of Place - Doreen Massey argues that places are dynamic, with
multiple identities.

Clone Towns - Arguably, the 'geography of nowhere' (Urban sprawl leading to
community-less cities with identical shopping malls) can be seen through the

proliferation of clone towns in the UK. These are settlements where high streets
are dominated by chain stores.

Localisation of Place - A response to the proliferation of globalisation. It can be
seen through the promotion of local goods and services.

Belonging - This idea is increasingly seen as relevant to making places sustainable
and successful. Such as the transition town movement.

Explain the Concept of an 'Insider' and 'Outsider' Perspective - The significance an
individual or group attaches to a particular place may be influenced by feelings of
belonging or alienation, a sense of being an insider or an outsider. Some places
will elicit topophilia and topophobia.

Insider - Viewpoint from an individual within a place, who lives there and has an
experience of the place.

Outsider - Viewpoint of someone who is not from the certain place, doesn't live
there and has little to no experience of that place.

Explain the Concept of Social and Spatial Exclusion - All places are shaped by
people and understood by them in different ways. It follows that anybody whose
behaviour varies from what is seen as normal may feel uncomfortable.

Excluded groups may include ethnic minorities, immigrants and local nationals.

The dominant groups who have the economic, social and cultural power in a
location or within a society may make such wrongdoers feel out of place.

Explain the Concept of a Near and Far Place - A category of a place is a
near/experience place or a far/media place.

A near or far place refers the geographical proximity to a place or the emotional
connection to a place. In a globalised world, geographically distance places need
not be unfamiliar.

The concepts of near and far can create feelings of 'us' and 'them' which can have
negative impacts such as war or violence.

Explain the Concept of an Experience and Media Place - Experienced places are
those places that a person has spent time in.

Media places are places that a person has only read about or seen on film.

The reality of a place can be very different to that portrayed by the media. Rural
England is often portrayed as the best place to live but rural areas actually
experience significant issues such as a lack of employment opportunities.

Experienced - Improvements in transportation mean we can now experience
more places than people previously could. Experiencing a place allows us to
obtain a better understanding of it.
