Chemistry topic 2 edexcel a-level questions
2024
Define ionic bonding - The strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely
charged ions

How does ionic radius and ionic charge affect the strength of ionic bonding -
Larger ionic charge will increase the strength of the bond.Smaller ionic raidus can
reduce the distance between the ions, and strengthen the bond. Large radius
increases the distance > weakens the bond.

How are ions formed? - When atoms lose or gain electrons

What is the trend in atomic radii going down a group? - The radii increase as there
are more layers of electrons

What does isoelectronic mean? - same electron configuration

What is the trend in radii for a set of isoelectronic atoms? - More protons =
electrons in the shell are more attracted to the nucleus meaning that the radius
decreases

What are the main properties of ionic compounds - They are hard.

, Chemistry topic 2 edexcel a-level questions

They are brittle.

They have high melting points and also high boiling points.

They conduct electricity but only when they are dissolved in water.

How does migration of ions provide evidence for the existence of ions - Positive
blue copper(II) ions, Cu2+(aq) are attracted to the cathode and yellow
chromate(VI) ions, CrO4 2-(aq) are attracted to the anode

Define covalent bond - The strong electrostatic attraction between two nuclei and
the shared pair of electrons between them

What is a dative covalent bond? - When the pair of electrons forming a covalent
bond are donated by one atom only.

What is the relationship between bond length and bond strength for covalent
bonds - As the bond strength increases, the bond length decreases

What is the shape of a single molecule or ion determined by - The repulsion
between the electron pairs that surround a central atom
