The following discussion does not only summarise what this module is about; but also mentions key sources on decoloniality and recommends theoretical reforms in the meaning-making process of the concept of rural development. Rural development is a phenomenon that always invokes an image of development as something that is linear with space and consists of those who are “ahead” in terms of development and those who are lagging “behind”. However, Ndlovu et. al (2024), Ndlovu Gatsheni (2013), Plaatjie (2020), and many other scholars call for decolonisation of the concept of rural development. Accordingly, the call by these scholars rests on the fact that “the narrative of rural development must be liberated from Western orientations to reflect African indigeneity” (Ndlovu-Gatsheni, 2013:3). Write an essay in which you critically discuss the significance of modernisation, dependency and decolonial theories in the context of rural development. In your essay Ø explain the meaning and the complex nature of rural development. Ø discuss the significance of modernisation and dependency theories in rural development. Ø evaluate how decolonial theory redefines the complex nature of rural development.
