Lap 5 Hoses
Hose - answeris a flexible fluid conductor which is used to connect components of a
machine that move in relation to each other.
Three basic elements that make up a hose - answer-inner tube
-reinforcement
-cover
inner tube - answerthe linning of the hose which contacts the fluid. inner tube materials
are selected to be compatible with the fluid inside the hose.
reinforcement - answerthe fabric, plastic, or metal layers which surround the inner tube.
can be up to six layers of reinforcement in a hose type. these layers give strength to the
hose to withstand internal pressures and external forces.
cover - answerthe outer layer of the hose that protects the inner tube and reinforcing
layers from chemical attack, mechanical damages, sunlight, and abrasions. it can be
made of rubber, fabric, or braided steel mesh.
two categories of hoses - answer-rubber hose
-metal hose
rubber hose - answeris usded for a wide variety of installations where the line pressures
go as high as 6000 psi, depending on hose construction. is used for air, water, fuel, oil,
antifreeze, and hydraulic fluid.
metal hose - answeris used in installations where temperatures range from -300
degrees F to +1500 degrees F and where abrasion resistance is needed. it is
recommended for steam, hot oil, liquefied gases, and refrigerants.
Five types of the most commonly used hoses - answer-multiple braid- steel wire
-single braid- steel wire
-fiber braid
-thermoplastic
-suction
Multiple braid-steel wire - answercan have from two to six alternating layers of spiral
steel wire over a fabric layer. it is recommended for extremely high pressure
applications- as much as 6000 psi. is used for extremely high pressure hydraulic
applications and severe operating conditions.
