RHEUMATIC FEVER
• It is a systemic, post streptococcal, non-suppurative
inflammatory disease
• Principally affecting the heart, joints, central nervous
system, skin, subcutaneous tissue
• Following the initial pharyngitis a latent period of 2 to
3 weeks occurs before the first sign and symptoms
, PATHOGENESIS
Group A ß hemolytic streptococcal infection
Pharyngitis
Post pharyngeal infection [2-3 weeks]
Production of antibody against streptococcal cell antigen
Connective tissue of the heart , blood vessels , joints and
subcutaneous tissues
have antigen similarity to streptococcal cell antigen
