1. Refugee Definition: a person who escaped from their country due
to fear of being persecuted, imprisoned, or tortured-- all
for their political or religious background. It is a status that
is politically-designated.

2. Cold War & Com- Definition: Reason why US became involved in Vietnam.
munism Fought to prevent spread of ______ in Southeast Asia.

Significance: It was the 1st televised war. the American
public had seen its brutality; rationalized the war was not
ideological or moral.

3. "Secret War" Definition: The US started a ___ by dropping bombs in
(1965-1973) Laos and Cambodia in order to stop Northern Vietnam
from invading. Also sprayed Napalm in forests to prevent
them from hiding.

Significance: The vast majority that were killed (2-3 mil-
lion Vietnamese) were civilians and thus South Vietnam
wrongfully bombed. Chemicals also poisoned water and
land, as well as burned skin.

4. Vietnam War Definition: A Vietnamese civil war that the US involved
(1955-1975) themselves in for 10 years. Resulted in Saigon surrender-
ing to Vietcong, and thus the US's withdrawal.

Significance: War spread to Cambodia and Laos.

5. Khmer Rouge Definition: At the end of Viet war, this group became gov-
ernment of Cambodia. In order to rebuild their country as
an independent nation, they closed all Western-promoting
institutions: depopulated cities, left technology, abolished
education system.

Significance: Closed Cambodia off from all media; the
world did not know until the 1990s.

6. The Killing Fields Definition: The Khmer Rouge documented the Cambodian
or Cambodi- citizens they questioned, tortured, and killed-- all because
