1.1. Identify the type of rhyme used in the poem. Provide a reason and a quotation from the poem
in support of your answer. (3 marks)
ANSWER:
The poem uses a simple rhyme scheme of AABB. This is evident because the end words of each pair of
lines rhyme with each other.
Example:
• "The moon has a face like the clock in the hall; She shines on thieves on the garden wall,"
• "The squalling cat and the squeaking mouse, The howling dog by the door of the house,"
The rhyming words "hall" and "wall" (lines 1 and 2) as well as "mouse" and "house" (lines 5 and 6)
illustrate this rhyme pattern.
1.2. Identify the simile in the poem and explain the effect of this simile. (3 marks)
