Alterations in the DNA sequence that can affect the functio
of genes.

Gene mutations can occur spontaneously during DNA
replication or cell division. In contrast, induced mutation
are from exposure to environmental factors (mutagens)
such as chemical mutagens, physical mutagens (UV ligh
or X-rays), or biological mutagens (viruses).
