Problem -Cause -Solution Speech Persuasive Speech Final Draft I. Introduction a. Attention Getter : “A nation without borders is no nation at all” – Ronald Reagan b. Background : Illegal immigration has been an issue with fluctuating intensity over the past several decades. It proves to be a difficult problem with no 100% solution, but illegal immigration numbers are currently reporting at all -
time highs: posing serious concerns for our country . c. Audience Relevance : When it comes to a polarizing and nuanced topic like illegal immigration , it is important that Americans are educated and able to make their own informed decisions. d. Speaker Credibility : As a child of immigrants who has taken interest in the current situation at our Southern border, I understand both arguments against illegal immigration . However, after doing thorough research on the topic and listening to my family’s perspective, I chose a stance that I believe is more correct. e. Thesis : United States’ freedoms, endless opportunities, and lenient immigration policy has attracted millions of undocumented foreigners, but with illegal immigration straining American taxpayer funds and undermining the legal immigration process, we must tighten border control through increased police patrolling and asylum policy reform to enforce US authority. f. Preview of Main Points : First, I will present how society has been negatively affected by the overwhelming flow of undocumented immigrants into our country then I will examine why there is a high demand for immigration to the US and how the government’s current policies have enabled illegal immigration to happen. Lastly, I will propose a policy to tighten border control and explain why this solution is the best approach to address this issue. Transition to 1st Main Point : - First I will discus s the negative effects of illegal immigration of society. II. Main Point 1 : Cons of illegal immigration a. Sub-point A : Strains public funding The Emergency Food and Shelter Program was established 41 years ago to fund non -profit organizations that help provide housing and food for local homeless and low -income families. However, a ccording to Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a non-partisan research organization devoted to U.S. immigration policy, in an article published on February 13, 2024, “ The original purpose of this program has been swallowed up by a new mission — assisting undocumented border -crossers with transportation and basic needs. In 2023, $425 million of your money was budgeted for that task” (end quote). Many similar programs depend on funding from the government to keep operating. Additionally, m any Americans depend on these programs and to stay fed and housed . However, with this crucial money being used to attend the needs of undocumented immigrants, millions of Americans are left with less aid. Additionally, with asylum seekers requiring government benefits but unable to contribute to tax funds, the current immigration issue proves to be an unsustainable financial burden at the state and national level s as well. b. Sub-point B : Unfair to legal immigrants According to David J. Bier, the associate director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, a public policy research organization with over 40 years of experience , in an article published on June 18, 2019, “Since 1991 […] time spent waiting to apply for a green card has doubled from an average of 2 years and 10 months to 5 years and 8 months” (end quote). Every year, millions of people around the world apply and wait for their chance to come to the US. By allowing illegal immigrants into our country through our border, it is insulting to those who follow proper immigration policy and undermines the US government’s ability to control its border. Many people around the world, including my family in Vietnam, wonder why they have to wait over a decade to come to the US, while others can claim asylum at the border and easily get their foot in the door. Transition to 2nd Main Point : N ow that I have discussed why undocumented immigration is a problem, I will move on to what creates and enables this issue .
