Leading in engineering management refers to the function of an engineering manager that causes people to take effective action. Leadership is an influence process that enable managers to get their people to do willingly what must be done, do well what ought to be done. Leadership is defined as the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toeard goal achievement. Leadership discovering the company's destiny and having the courage to follow it. leadershp is interpersonal nfluence, exercised in a situation and directed, through the communication process, toward the attainment of a specified goal/s. Task Oriented -involved in structuring the roles of subordinates -providing them instructions, and behaving in ways that will increase the performance of the group. -are directives given to employees to get things done and to ensure that organizational goals are met. People oriented -include showing concern for employee feelings and treating employees with respect -genuinely cares about the well-being of their employees, and they demonstrate their concern in their actions and decisions. Authoritarian leaders make decision alone without necessarily involving employeees in the decision making process. democratic employees participate in the making of the decision coaching lively, supportive bureautic practical, methodical Laissez- faire leave employees alone to make the decision. the leader provides minimum guidance and involvement in the decision. the nice guy places too much value on social acceptance while neglecting technical tasks. the loser neither obtains acceptance from others nor gets the job done. the compromiser balances both the needs of people and task factors. the task master is interested in getting the job done right without concern for human feelings. the ideal manager gets the job done and at the same time makes everyone happy fiedler's contingency theory -earliest and one of the most influential contingency theories was develope by frederick F. -theory of leadership effectiveness - people can be effective in different situation Least Preferred Coworker (LPC) accrdng to fiedler's contingecy theory, leader's style is measured by this scale. situational leadership theory -leaders must used different leadership style -must use the right style of behaviours Path-goal theory of leadership based on expectancy theory of motivation rewarded efforts technical skills skills a leader must possess to enable him to understand and make decisions about worl processes, activities, and technology. is specialized knowledge needed to perform a job human skils this skills refers to the ability of a leader to deal with people, both inside and outside the organization. good leaders must know how to get along with people, motivate them and inspire them. conceptual skills refer to the ability to think in abstract terms, to see how parts fit together to form the whole a leader without this will fail to achieve this. deciding arriving at conclusions and judgements norm a decision with incomplete data communicating creating, understanding and resolving conflicts by talking, meeting, or writing to others. motivating inspiring, encouraging or impelling others selecting people choosing the right employees for the position developing perople helping employees improve their knowledge, attitude adn skills
