Calibration of thermometers-

Aim-

Calibration is the process of checking a measuring instrument to check its accuracy. The aim of this
experiment was to work out the accuracy of both of the thermometers used which were alcohol
filled and digital to determine which was more accurate and more reliable to use as a result.

Equipment list-

 Beaker
 Ice
 Water
 Bunsen burner
 Alcohol filled thermometer
 Digital thermometer

Method for ice cubes-

Place ice cubes in a beaker and fill with water until ice cubes are covered.

Mix the ice cubes and water for 30 seconds.

Place the alcohol thermometer in the beaker surrounded by ice cubes that are constantly moving.

Allow the thermometer to sit for 30 seconds before taking the first reading.

Repeat two more times to get 3 readings so an average can be taken.

Replace the alcohol filled thermometer with a digital one.

Allow the digital thermometer to sit for 30 seconds before taking the first reading.

Repeat the steps two more times to get 3 readings to an average can be taken.



Method for boiling water-

Place water into a beaker and place over a Bunsen burner.

Allow the water to boil over the Bunsen burner which may take around 3-5 mins.

Once steam and bubbles form, the water is boiling.

Place the alcohol filled thermometer in the boiling water.

Allow it to sit for around 30 seconds before taking the first reading.

Repeat two more times so and average can be taken.

Replace the alcohol filled thermometer with a digital thermometer.

Allow the digital thermometer to sit for 30 seconds before taking the first reading.

Repeat two more times so an average can be taken.
