FMT3701
ASSIGNMENT 2
DUE DATE: 23 JULY 2024

, 1.5 Assessment 2

QUESTION 1:

Explain the concept, ‘assessment’, as outlined in the CAPS document and your
study guide.

According to study guide/CAPS

Assessment has long been used as a tool to inform teachers of learners’
achievement of learning outcomes together with the successfulness of their own
instruction, and is an integral component in the teaching and learning process and
planning stages. “To determine a learner’s instructional needs, assessment must
provide information in two key areas. Assessment data should be collected to help
you to analyse the output of your instruction – ‘What is it that my learner knows, can
show and do?’ Assessment practices should also allow you to evaluate your teaching
methods – ‘How do I plan my teaching in order to improve the performance and meet
the diverse needs of my learners?’” (DBE, nod).

QUESTION 2:

There are various forms of assessment. Provide a mathematical example for
each form of assessment listed below. (The example must be relevant to
Mathematics in the Foundation Phase.)

2.1 Classwork Observation
The teacher observes students as they work on a counting activity using
manipulatives (e.g., counting blocks or beads). The teacher notes how students
group the objects, whether they count accurately, and if they can identify the total
number of objects.

2.2 Orals/Discussions
During a class discussion about shapes, the teacher asks individual students to
describe the properties of basic geometric shapes such as circles, squares, and
triangles. The teacher evaluates the students' understanding based on their ability to
identify shapes and describe their properties correctly.

2.3 Practical Demonstrations
The teacher asks students to demonstrate how they solve a simple addition problem
using physical objects. For example, the teacher might say, "Show me how you
would add 3 apples and 2 apples." The students use toy apples to physically
demonstrate the addition, showing their understanding of the concept.
