Functionalism:

Functionalism is a social perspective that sees society as a structure with interconnected
parts, parts that are all connected and function together. This perspective is described as
consensus theory meaning, it is based on agreement and harmony and is a total contrast to
the conflict theory. Functionalists believe, all different parts of the society must work together
in order to maintain social order. They idea is linked to a human body and believe that each
organ represents a social institution. Each organ works together with other organs to
maintain the body and sustain life. This then emphasises their point that if one part of the
body stops functioning then the whole body is affected, hence if one social institution is not
functioning then it affects all other social institutions. An example is that if the family
institution is not functioning then it can affect the school institution which could have an
adverse effect on future employment and opportunities. Functionalism argues that illness is
a form of deviance that disturbs the social function of a society.

Talcott came up with the idea of sick role. This is the idea that when a person becomes ill,
he temporarily comes out of his normal role and starts to dysfunction for a little while. They
are expected to get better and want to come back to normal. It is a scenario where a patient
becomes ill of some nature and the first action that takes places is the complaining and
