D3
Evaluate how selected retailers have met their social, ethical,
environmental and corporate social responsibilities
This segment of the assignment will contain an evaluation on two superstores and how they met their social,
environmental and corporate social responsibilities.

 Tesco
Social
Tesco must ensure they meet their social responsibilities, an example of Tesco doing so is by creating the Little
helps Plan, this focuses on listing to priorities of stake holders, such as the local community, this allows for
Tesco to listen to social changes such as immigration, Tesco tackles immigration by creating a world food aisle
within every store, this allows Tesco to meet social responsibilities as they have catered towards their
stakeholders. By this happening it allows Tesco to meet one of their social reasonability’s and cater towards
customers.

ASDA also has a world food isle within their store meaning they cannot benefit from Tesco’s systems. Both
organisations have met or incorporated methods to help social responsibilities.

Corporate Social Responsibilities
Tesco’s also ensures they meet Corporate Social responsibility as it is key to cater towards customer’s needs,
an Example of Tesco’s doing so in Ireland is: “our stores serve a large number of communities throughout the
country. Our interactions with these communicates remind us daily about our responsibilities as a business”
(Tesco, 2018). This shows the importance of Tesco’s as they want to ensure their local community focus is put
first and shows that they are doing what they can to listen to the community and cater towards their needs. To
further back this point up Tesco’s has said “Our customers want to see more local products and eat more
healthy food” (Tesco, 2018) This also shows that Tesco not only want to cater towards locals, such as by
implementing specialist foods, but also want to help customers and let them buy items which have good
nutritional values and are healthy.

CSR is key within superstores as they must ensure they listen to their community focus groups and cater
towards them. ASDA could benefit from Tesco by incorporating this method by catering towards there
community’s, such as by seeing what ethic group lives in every community and them get in stock that is
requested , such as in an area which is predominantly Muslim, ASDA could implement foods such as Halal
meat.

Ethical
Ethical responsibilities are key within an organisation such as Tesco, an example of this is Fair trade which
Tesco takes very seriously, an example of this is Tesco’s Finest tea and coffee, sugar, nuts, chocolate, wine etc.
Tesco have implemented Fairtrade to their products to cater towards customers’ needs as well as look good in
the public eye. Tesco have implemented fair prices on fair trade items to allow less developed countries to
take the money and develop their countries, allowing the country to boost its economy and grow. Rather than
giving the countries small pay and keeping big price margins for themselves.

Ethical responsibilities are key within superstores and is implement into both ASDA and Tesco as they ensure
they use fair trade to meet target market needs as well as look good in the public eye as they are helping
developing country’s maximize their profits. Meaning ASDA does not need to take any actions from Tesco as
they’re already doing what they need to.
