LEARNING UNIT 1: CHAPTER 1
AN OVERVIEW
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE
CYCLE (SDLC)?
It provides a framework, including methodologies, models, tools, and techniques, to build
and deploy an information system. Its purpose is to provide structure and organization to
the development process.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INFORMATION SYSTEM
AND A COMPUTER APPLICATION?
Usually, a computer application is a single computer program that may or may not be
connected to a database. An information system is normally multiple computer programs
that are connected to a database and thus provide as output various types and quantities of
information.
Computer application(app): a computer software program that executes on a computing device to
carry out a specific set of functions.
o Modest scope
Information system: a set of interrelated components that collects, processes, stores, and provides
as output the information needed to complete business tasks.
o Boarder in scope than “app”
o Includes database and related manual processes
System analysis: those activities that enable a person to understand and specify what a system
should accomplish.
System design: those activities that enable a person to define and describe in detail the system that
solves the need.
System analysis
What is required for the
new system to solve the
problem
System design
How the system will
operate to solve the
problem
, PLAN AND MONITOR THE PROJECT
Iterative and Agile Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE FOR ITERATION
Describes the work and covers Core Processes 3,4,5, and 6
