Topic Name(s) Research
Endocrine system - Limitation Individual di erences in responses to danger
fight or flight Some people may not respond by fighting or flight
Some people's response is standing frozen (freeze
response) and feeling paralysed when in stressful
situations and they cant move
So the explanation of fight or flight ignores individual
di erences
Endocrine system - Research only on Most of the research done for fight or flight only uses
fight or flight males male participant
This assumed that both males and females react the same
- beta bias
Without actually rearching women, it cannot be
generalised e ectively to a whole population as women
are likely to act di erent to men - lack population
validity
Researchers have suggested women react less aggressively
- may not flight
Endocrine system - Negative Fight or flight is an excellent explanation for response to
fight or flight consequences - danger a long time ago when we were cavemen
usefulness Now, people tend to experience stress in various ways
and in a much less extreme way eg revising for exams
People also experience stress on a daily basis and unlikely
to respond by fight or flight
Frequent non threatening - response can become
overactivated
This has negative health implications

, Localisation in the Sperry and Patients undergo surgery of severing their corpus
brain - Split brain Gazzaniga callosum which connects the two hemispheres of the
research (hemispheric brain
lateralisation) Seizures cause an increase in neural activity and therefore
cutting the corpus callosum causes a ‘split brain’ and
prevents high activity causing seizures
Sperry presented a stimulus (picture) of each of the
hemispheres - vision is contralaterally organised so to
asses left hemisphere, presented to RHS vice verse
Asked patients to point to a group of pictures which
matched the original picture they saw
Found that:
When presented to either hemisphere, the patients could
easily point out the same image after - the ability to
identify the image is not hemispherically lateralized
When asked to verbally describe the image after being
presented to right hemisphere (LHS), patients could not
speak - shows that language is hemispherically lateralized
to the left hemisphere
(W) Uses a small sample of patients, lack population
validity and generalisability
(W) patients had abnormality in their brain already
having a seizure (confounding variable) - their brain
function di erently to normal brains
(W) research hasn't been replicated in recent studies -
showed that language is not only responsibly by left hem
Localisation in the Danelli - EB Danelli case study on EB
brain - Split brain EB had left hem. Removed when so lost language skills
research (hemispheric initially
lateralisation) After rehab he regained skills which wouldn't be possible
if skills lateralized to left hem
Used verbal testing and MRI
Compared images from his brain to normal brains,
hemispherically lateralized functions can be taken in by
the right non specialised
