Perineal membrane
The perineal membrane is a fibrous sheet located in the pelvic region, forming part of the pelvic floor. It stretches across the anterior part of the pelvic outlet and is anchored to the pubic bones. The perineal membrane supports pelvic organs and provides attachment points for muscles involved in urinary and sexual function. It has openings for the urethra and, in females, the vagina. The membrane's integrity is crucial for maintaining pelvic stability and function. Damage or weakening of the perineal membrane can lead to pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, highlighting its importance in pelvic health.
