Drug - Substance that Alters Bodily Function OTC - (Over the counter drugs) Medication that can be purchased in pharmacies that are not as severe as RX. OTC drugs does not cure illness and is used to treat acute or sudden conditions. RX - Can only be prescribed by doctors and are specific. It contains more side effects as it is more severe. Drugs in Teens - ... Six type of OTC drugs - -Cough & cold -Allergy and asthma -Analgesics -Laxatives -Antacids -Other Laxatives - Used to increase PH level in the stomach to treat constipation. Examples of laxatives include Metamucil, Citrucel, Fibercon etc. Long term effects include dehydration, kidney stones, kidney failures, damage to the muscular function of the bowel etc. Antacids - Used to treat sour stomach or indigestion. Examples include Tums, Mylanta etc. Cough/Cold and Allergy and Asthma - Used to treat colds and or allergies. Serve as anti-histamine. Examples include Sudafed, Dayquil, Visine, Afrin, Clartin etc. Analgesics - Pain relievers. Examples include Motrin, Aspirin, Tylenol etc.Other - -caffeine pills -appetite suppressants -other OTC drugs that don't fit int he above categories CNS - Central nervous system Dopamine - 'feel good' chemical. Over time, receptors start to go out and the only choice is to take more of it causing addictions. Drug abuse - Use of prescription medication to create an altered state, to get high, or for reasonsor by people-other them those intended by the prescribing clinicians. Opioids - Relieved pain. It diminishes the perception of pain. Examples include Vicodin, Morphine, Oxycontin, Percolate etc. Effects include respiratory depression, constipation, drowsiness and even death. It attacks proteins and affects the perception of pain, CNS Depressants - Treat anxiety and sleep disorders. Examples include Xanax, Valium, Ambien, Lunesta etc. The drug slows down normal activity in the brain and may cause death if combined with other similar medications. It also causes respiratory depression, seizures and lowers HR. Stimulants - prescribed for narcolepsy and ADHD. Examples include Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta etc. which helps you focus. Effects include higher body temperature, irregular heartbeat, cardiovascular system failure, paranoia, hostility and fatal seizures. ADHD - ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER Narcolepsy - A sleep disorder characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks. The sufferer may lapse directly into REM sleep, often at inopportune times. How do teenagers get them? - -Medicine cabinets -Unscrupulous Pharmacies-Fraudulent Prescriptions (altering) -Doctor shopping -Trafficking them (Handing out, selling them, parties)
