The Changing Landscape of Collaborative Practice JoAnn Trybulski, Terry Mahan Buttaro We are living in a world of VUCA—volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Used by Robert Johansen to characterize the world at large, VUCA is certainly applicable to the current state of collaborative practice and primary care. 1 The former state of primary care practice with welldefined rules and roles has been replaced by new rules and new types of health care professionals. There is unchallenged recognition of the importance of an evidence base for practice decisions, disease prevention, health promotion, maintenance of well-being, involvement of patients in their health decisions, and coordination of care given by a team of health care providers. With the institution of provisions of the Affordable Care Act, the type of insurance and policy level chosen by a patient shapes the providers and hospitals from which a patient may receive care and dictates the cost of medications and treatments for each patient. The landscape of collaborative practice is in a constant state of evolution, with patients and purchasers of health care at the center.
