THE ESSENTIAL TENSION OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY (INTRODUCTION)
Tomás Ibáñez (2003)
Summary:
The editors of this work, especially Professor Darío Páez, are aware of the marked epistemological discrepancies that separate us.
We have had intense debates, sometimes so direct that they might surprise those not accustomed to straightforward discussions.
Inviting me to comment on this book breaks the implicit rule of offering the introductory pages to someone who shares the authors'
positions, thus ensuring a complacent or even laudatory presentation. This stance is courageous and demonstrates a commitment
in practice to the importance of epistemological issues and the need to address them without restriction. This is a point on which
I fully agree with the authors, and which encourages me to express my opinions freely.
I will use this freedom to express my disagreement with the procedure of restricting critical debate, as when those who practice it
are accused of being destroyers of other people's ideas or of expressing historical nonsense, as mentioned in some chapter of the
book. In addition, I affirm that this work exceptionally fulfills what it promises and constitutes a valuable tool, not only for students
of social psychology, but also for those who teach, research, or apply this discipline.
Although the chapters differ, each of them deserves praise for different concepts. For example, Deconchy's for his thoroughness,
finesse, and rigor in the analysis of experimentation in "natural" social systems, where he has carried out some of the best research
in this field. Apodaka and Páez's work stands out for its precision in unraveling the methodological problems of structural models.
The work of Páez, Valencia, Morales and Ursua is distinguished by its clarity, level of information and accuracy in addressing the
problem of social psychology as a whole, being a substantial contribution to the book.
In short, although I would have approached this book differently, I highly recommend reading it because of its indispensable
pluralism of approaches. In this brief introduction, I prefer to reflect on certain metatheoretical problems that I consider
fundamental rather than pointing out possible limitations of the set of texts gathered here.
A) THE MEANINGLESSNESS OF THE "METHODOLOGICAL WARS"
Questioning the characteristics, scope and validity of the methods used by social psychologists, as well as elucidating the
fundamental assumptions on which these methods are based and reflecting critically on the problems that arise from these
assumptions, is an essential requirement for anyone interested in researching or understanding social psychology. Without this
reflection, it would be impossible to understand the nature of the data generated in the research or to evaluate the body of
knowledge that constitutes the discipline.
Historically, it has been argued both that the validity of scientific knowledge depends exclusively on the correct application of a
proper, presumably neutral, method, and that no method can be considered neutral since they are all imbued with theories that
inform their construction. Both positions, although apparently opposed, end in the fetishization of the method. In one case, the
method determines the validity of the data; in the other, this validity depends on the theories underlying the method. Both
perspectives encourage methodological sectarianism, prescribing certain methods as valid and disqualifying others.
It is crucial to understand that taking a critical stance toward standard social psychology and its methods does not imply
indiscriminately rejecting all methodology. Methodological freedom arises when we stop considering that a method guarantees
the validity of knowledge and recognize that the choice of method must be guided by the specific problem to be addressed. This
approach avoids "methodological militantism" and allows for greater flexibility and tolerance in research practice.
The nature of scientific knowledge depends not only on the method used or the theory adopted, but mainly on the metatheory
that underpins the research activity. This metatheory defines how data is structured and interpreted and is essential to
understanding the direction and impact of social psychology. That is why metatheoretical postulates should receive priority
attention, as they ultimately determine the quality and validity of the scientific knowledge produced.
B) HERMENEUTICS, REFLEXIVITY AND HISTORICITY
Neither data nor methods in social psychology are ever completely objective or neutral. Data are influenced by theoretical and
conceptual elements that constitute them as data, and their interpretation always depends on the theories used. Previously, it was
believed that the validity of scientific knowledge resided in the evidence provided directly by the data, without acknowledging the
ventriloquism operation that animates them. It is essential to understand that concepts and theories are expressed through natural
language, even in contexts of strict mathematical formalism, which introduces a hermeneutical dimension that crosses all sciences.
