Does hard engineering reduce longshore drift at Swanage?
Aims:
- To find out if the groynes reduced or stopped LSD
- To see if there was a bigger beach on the south side of the groynes
Swanage is located in the South of England along the coast in the county of
Dorset. Swanage is in the Isle of Purbeck.
This was a suitable topic for a geographical enquiry because it links to our
previous topic of coasts where we studied coastal management, erosion &
deposition.
Why was Swanage suitable for this fieldwork?
- Accessible to get there from London
- Easy to get onto the beach
- Recent refurbishment of groynes in 2002
- 18 groynes - lots of data
Primary Data:
- Groyne drop
- Beach Width
- Longshore Drift
Secondary Data:
- Scopac map
Risk Assessment & Solutions:
- High tide - Check tide timetable & stay away from the water
- Cliffs - Stand 2m away from the cliff
- Extreme weather - Check the weather & bring appropriate clothing
- Equipment - Keep sharp poles pointed at the ground
