Unit 8 - Recruitment and selection
Assignment 1
P1 - Explain how a large business recruits and selects giving reasons for their
process
Introduction
I have been asked to choose a large business. I have chosen Asda. With the
research I find, I must create a case study that includes Asda’s recruitment and
selection processes. I must analyse and evaluate this information and find reasons
why these processes have contributed to the businesses success. I will be talking
about the businesses activities, its size but also demonstrate an understanding of its
workforce planning and the recruitment and selection process.
Business synopsis
Asda is a very popular UK supermarket that has a large market share. They have
stores in 27 countries as they offer groceries and everyday essential products. Since
2014, they have launched the clothing brand “George”, where customers are able to
purchase clothing that can be seen as budget friendly. Customers are able to save
money but also purchase items that are high quality giving them the best value.
Asda is a public limited company which means they are required to publish their
financial position as potential shareholders need to know if the shares are worth
investing in .Since Asda is a PLC, it means that they have limited liability, which
means they will be legally distinct from the company's owners. All of Asda's assets
will be safeguarded in the event that they incur debt. In 2022, Asda had made around
£24.5 billion profit.
Asdas main aims are:
- Become Britain's best value retailer
- Create profit
Objectives for Asda:
- Continue giving great customer service
, Alisha Hussain
- Have a positive business culture
Workforce planning
Asda must fit the quantity, expertise, and skill level of its workforce to its present and
future requirements. There are over 145,000 people that work at Asda. The
company welcomes 18 million customers weekly on average. Asda must assess how
many skilled workers they already have, how they anticipate the future, and how
many more they will require in order to determine their demands. Asda uses a
workforce planning table such as appraisals. This is so that they can monitor the
performance of employees accomplished such as if they are providing good
customer service. By doing this, Asda is able to make sure that their employees are
right for the business, which will lead to less mistakes and dissatisfaction. This
means that there will be more high quality work being produced. Another workforce
planning that Asda uses is Balance score cards (BSC). This is used on the financial
perspective of the business but also customer perspective, an internal business
process and innovation perspectives. Some reasons why Asda would want to recruit
is because:
The business is growing: This indicates that the target market or client base is
expanding, and that sales are rising. As a result, more employees may be required
locally or nationally to meet the demand. Asda continuously hires workers from many
sectors to meet the demands of customer service and stocking since their market
share is still rising and they are constantly creating new products to target their
consumers' wants and requirements. Some reasons why Asda would need to recruit
individuals are because:
Job roles are changing: Technological advancements have an impact on how
occupations are done. For instance, in the UK, self-service tills were first
implemented in 2002. This did not result in the supermarket hiring fewer employees;
rather, it allowed them to fill the shelves and boost sales rather than having
employees stand by the registers waiting for customers.
Seasonal fluctuations leading to new or temporary staff: Seasonal variations in sales
are common for many firms. Peak sales periods for them are during holidays like
Christmas, Easter, and even Ramadan. There will be a greater need for temporary
workers to support sales. Asda might pay more than normal to entice workers to
apply for this position.
Recruitment process that Asda uses
Asda may recruit the people it needs to fill certain job roles by using the recruitment
process. These employees might need to be hired in order to replace departing
employees, because the company is expanding, or because Asda needs workers
with particular skills and knowledge. Hiring qualified employees is crucial to the
success of an organisation such as Asda. individuals are frequently a company's
