AVID Basics Exam |2024 Release| AVID AVID stands for advancement via individual determination. We are more than a class, we are a family. We know every student is capable of going to college, however, they must be determined enough to get there. AVID takes that determination and multiplies its impact by providing additional support and guidance to all students who want it. WICOR How does AVID do all that it does? Through the core areas of, Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading. This acronym represents what you will see on a daily basis in all of your AVID classes. Writing Writing is a very important skill that is needed to get to college. Therefore AVID focuses on improving student's writing skills. Learning through writing and writing college essays are just a few areas we practice. Inquiry A process of learning that starts with asking questions and proceeds by seeking the answers to the questions We regularly focus lessons around a central lesson. Additionally, two times per week tutorials happen. Tutorials are where students come in with a question and their group members help them answer it by asking more questions. Collaboration In the AVID classroom, we are all about family and community. Therefore you will work together regularly. We love to do a lot of team building! Organization Organization is the key to success. There will be weekly accountability supports such as binder checks that will help students stay more organized while learning new organization skills. Reading Readijg is another very important skill in college. Throughout each AVID class, we will work on reading for comprehension and analysis skills. A-G A-G requirements are the basic requirements for entry into the CA public unversities. All A-G courses must be passed with a C or higher. GPA A calculated average of letter grades a student earns throughout school Team Building AVID has a lot of activities that are based upon getting to know your peers. Some have skills embedded into them, and others are just pure fun. SAT The SAT is a test of general knowledge in math and english. It is given by college board. We regularly practice and prepare for the SAT together in class. Most universities require that you take either the SAT or ACT. Transcripts School records that include a listing of courses you have taken along with the credits and grades you've received for them In AVID, we make sure you know how to read them and where to request them. extra-curricular activities These activities fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of school or university education, performed by students. Such activities are generally voluntary, non-paying, social, etc. Taking AVID helps you learn how to balance these extra items in your schedule. Tutorials AVID tutorials allow students to collaborate in studying for advanced course work and help students learn problem solving strategies. You work with a group of students on a problem you are having in one of your classes/on your assignments. TRF (Tutorial Request Form) A TRF is the form you fill out the NIGHT BEFORE tutorials. It asks you to explain your point of confusions (POC) and any academic language that is relevant to your POC. POC (Point of Confusion)
