, COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY
SECTION A

Selected Therapeutic Approach
The Therapeutic approach I have selected is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
because I am convinced of the benefits and value of this approach.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
Introduction
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a psychosocial intervention that is widely
used for treating mental disorders and focuses on developing coping strategies that
target solving current problems as well as changing unhelpful patterns in the
cognition such as, thoughts, beliefs, behaviours, emotional regulation and attitudes
(Corey, 2009).

CBT combine both cognitive and behavioural theories and methods in a short-term
treatment approach and focus on learning and practicing a variety of coping skills as
well as using behavioural coping strategies and tries to change what the client both
does and thinks, thus, CBT is a form of treatment that examines the various
connections between decisions and actions, beliefs, thoughts and emotion (Corey,
2009). Cognitive therapy and CBT are both based on a structured psychoeducational
model and emphasise the role of homework, the responsibility on the client to
resume an active role inside and outside therapy, developing a strong therapeutic
alliance, and make use of a variety of cognitive and behavioural strategies to
implement change (Corey, 2009). Because thought influences behaviour and
choices, changing unhelpful thoughts in the clients’ mind can have a significant
impact on the client’s mental health by adjusting these patterns of thinking and
improving their coping strategies (Leahy & Dowd, 2002).

Therapists in CBT are problem-focused and goal-directed and address the
symptoms of mental illness and because it is an active intervention, the client is also
assigned homework outside the therapy session in order to implement change
(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 1999). Clients are
also encouraged to keep a journal of their thoughts and this allows the therapist and
client to search for patterns in the clients’ thinking that can cause negative thoughts.
If these negative thoughts spiral out of control, it can lead to negative feelings and
can potentially result in harmful behaviours (Nami.org., 2010).
A typical CBT programme would consist of face-to-face sessions between the
client and the therapist, made up of 6-18 sessions of around an hour each with a gap
of a 1-3 week between sessions and this programme might be followed with a
session after one month and three months (National Institute for Health and Care
Excellence,
2008).
