, STUDENT SELECTION AT TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS
SUMMARY

Abstract

The aim of this study was to establish whether there existed a significant positive
relationship between grade 12 results and the final marks of Unisa psychology students
in Research methodology at third year level within the South African context.
My research report consisted of a quantitative and a qualitative study related to the two
different admission policies, namely assessment for selection and assessment for
placement.

The sampling frame for the quantitative research consisted of twenty UNISA honours
psychology students who participated voluntarily. Four of the students who participated
in the quantitative research were a part of the additional purpose (qualitative) of my
study which related to UNISA students’ perceptions of selection procedures.
For the quantitative study, participants were asked to provide the symbols for all their
grade 12 subjects as well as their final mark (percentage) for Research Methodology at
third year level. In the case of the qualitative study, structured interviews, observations
and document analysis were used.
A significant positive relationship was found to exist between grade 12 results and final
marks of Unisa psychology students in Research methodology at third year level
(r=0,879).

The document is not a complete research report. The author has one page as a literature review.A report requires 24 references, the author has about 6. Zero value for money
