Ademhaling wordt aangestuurd door het autonome zenuwstelsel, die het animale zenuwstelsel
bestuurt: je kunt dus tijdelijk je animale zenuwstelsel tegenhouden en je adem inhouden, maar
uiteindelijk grijpt je autonome zenuwstelsel in. Het autonome ademhalingscentrum bestaat uit een
groep zenuwstelsel in de hersenstam, die info krijgen van chemoreceptoren in de wand van
halsslagader en aorta d.m.v. CO2-concentratie, pH-waarde.
