QUESTION 1
Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow:
1.1 Investigate the challenges faced by individuals with albinism and discuss the impact these difficulties
can have on their daily lives. [5]
ANSWER:
Individuals with albinism face various challenges, both physical and social. Firstly, they have a lack of
melanin pigment in their skin, hair, and eyes, which makes them highly sensitive to sunlight. This
sensitivity increases the risk of sunburns and skin cancer, requiring constant protection from UV
radiation through sunscreen, protective clothing, and hats.
Secondly, visual impairments are common among individuals with albinism, including photophobia
(sensitivity to light) and reduced visual acuity. This affects their ability to see clearly, particularly in bright
light or low contrast situations. Visual aids such as glasses or magnifiers are often necessary to improve
visual function.
Socially, individuals with albinism often face discrimination and stigma due to their appearance. They
may experience teasing, name-calling, and exclusion from social activities. This can lead to low self-
esteem, anxiety, and depression, impacting their mental well-being and overall quality of life.
