U5 Speaking Ex.2: High School Subjects
Imagine you have been asked to give a short talk to a group of Japanese students who are
visiting your school. Your task is to (i) tell them how the subjects you study change through high
school, and (ii) explain the choices you made and how you made them.
- What subjects are compulsory in the junior years?
- When can you choose elective subjects?
- Which elective subjects did you choose in your junior years and why?
- What subjects are compulsory in the senior years.
- Which elective subjects did you choose for your senior years? Which did you give up and
why?

Hello, my name is Noah (a Y11 student). I will be talking to you all about high school subjects
at SGHS.

Firstly, compulsory subjects in Year 7 are maths, english, geography, PDHPE, science,
design tech, VA, music, and two chosen languages from Latin, French, Japanese, or Chinese.
You can drop a language or pick a new one in Year 8, along with the addition of drama and
history instead of geography.

I picked Japanese and Chinese but I actually dropped Chinese in exchange for French
because I thought Chinese was too hard.

Then, in Year 9, we could choose elective subjects from geography, history, VA, DT, home
economics, textiles, languages, drama, music, and commerce. Some of my friends also got
into accelerated courses for maths or IPT. I picked Japanese, drama and textiles because I
enjoyed them the most.

In Year 11, we had the same elective options except commerce was now split into economics
and legal studies, and science was split into chemistry, biology, and physics. I stuck with
Japanese and drama, and chose ancient history instead of textiles. I thought doing two major
projects was too tiring. Our compulsory subjects, maths and English, were also split into two
advanced and extension classes.

Now, for Year 12, we have the option to drop subjects so I plan on dropping drama because
all my friends think the teacher is scary and are dropping it too. We have the option of
dropping extension classes too but we need at least 10 units, so unfortunately I can’t drop
English extension.

(After the HSC you graduate and then 60 years later you die.)

Well then, I hope this speech was helpful! Thanks for listening! Any questions?
