- Matter has mass and occupies space
- Everything in the universe is either mass or energy
Particle Theory of Matter
- Matter is made up of atoms and molecules
- Particles of matter are constantly moving
Solid Liquid Gas
Closely packed/rigidly together Fairly packed close Widely spaced
Vibrate in fixed position Vibrate in relation to Move in rapid, random straight line
each other motion, particles move independently
✧༺ 2 ༻✧
,Matter FlowChart
- Pure substance > compound: CO2(g) has constant composition with a ratio
- If that ratio is a varied variable, then it’s a mixture
- A homogenous mixture, e.g. juice with 3 different liquids (because all liquid)
Pure Substances
- Have distinct measurable properties (e.g. melting and boiling points, reactivity, density)
- Chemically bonded together
- Cannot be separated into two or more substances by physical means
An element is a pure substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances
- Only 1 type of atom
- You can use a Hofmann voltameter to separate compounds into elements. The ratio
can be visible in the tubes: the amount of compressed gas (L) will be in the right ratio
Atom & Periodic Table Revision
- Subscript is number of protons = electrons
- Superscript (atomic number) minus subscript (atomic mass) = number of neutrons in
nucleus
- Metals in the green stairs are semi-metals
✧༺ 3 ༻✧
, Compounds & Mixtures
- Compounds have different properties from those of the elements they contain.
- Can turn into a mixture using energy
- Mixtures can be separated physically
- Composed of two or more pure substances physically combined together
- E.g. homogeneous mixtures can use filters to separate substances
- E.g. a teaspoon of salt in a litre of water forms a homogeneous mixture because the salt
is evenly distributed throughout the water.
- Solutions (one or more solute dissolved in a solvent).
- E.g. heterogeneous mixtures: something with iron, use magnet to remove
Mixture vs Compound vs Element
