Health care & disability systems Introduction to Rehabilitation Counseling This course is an overview of counseling and the specialty of rehabilitation counseling. Rehabilitation counseling, in particular, is an evolving field. Counseling, first described as guidance, has been around for more than four hundred years, but only within the last fifty to sixty years has it been recognized as a profession. In fact, it wasn't until 2009 that all fifty states had licensure for professional counselors when California became the last state to develop this credential What is rehabilitation? Many people think of addiction when they think of rehabilitation and, while addiction is certainly one of the groups that rehabilitation counselors serve, rehabilitation is much broader. When my husband tells folks that his wife has "been in rehabilitation for over thirty years," their first response is "bless your heart!" Rehabilitation professionals work with individuals with a multitude of disabilities, ranging from mental health, addiction, spinal cord injuries, intellectual disabilities, cognitive disabilities, sensory disabilities, and many other physical disabilities. Goal or Rehabilitation Counseling The goal of rehabilitation counseling is to enhance the lives of people with disabilities and to enable them to live, work, and play in their community. According to Banja (1990, p. 615), rehabilitation is "A holistic and integrated program of medical, physical, psychosocial, and vocational interventions that empower a person with a disability to achieve a fulfilling, socially meaningful, and functionally effective interaction in the world." The National Rehabilitation Association (NRA) says "we work toward a society where there are no barriers, environmental or attitudinal, to full employment and participation in life" - . Definition of Counseling In 2009, the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB)adopted the following definition of counseling, "Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals."
