UNIT 8:
Learning Aim A.
Introduction:
The musculoskeletal system is a system that consists of the skeleton and muscles of the body
such as the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, Cartlidge, and bursae. (eustice, 27.06.2022) The
skeleton's function in human bodies is that it ensures the body's structures are in place and
held together properly. It is a shield for the organs as it provides protection around them as
well as playing a big part in the movement of the body. (Burgess, 25.04.18) The skeleton also
produces red blood cells which allow the body to carry oxygen from the lungs to be pumped
out to the rest of the body. The body contains many muscles which all have distinct roles and
functions to assist the body in movement. (Burgess, 25.04.18) This would be a part of the
muscular system and no longer the musculoskeletal system as the body has different types of
muscles. The muscles that are part of the musculoskeletal system are known as skeletal
muscles. These muscles are attached to bones, aiding with contracting muscles causing
movement. Skeletal muscles are the only muscles that can be consciously controlled. (Burgess,

There are six main joints in the musculoskeletal system they include: ball and socket joint, the hinge
joint, the pivot joint, the saddle joint, the plane joint, and the condyloid joint. (News, n.d.)

• A ball and socket joint: such as the hip joint, allows for a wide range of movement in a
variety of directions.
• Hinge Joint: For instance, the elbow joint permits movement in a single plane, such as
bending and straightening. (kumar, 2021)
• pivot joint: The first and second cervical vertebrae's joint for example, this enables
rotational movement. (News, n.d.)
• Gliding Joint: A joint that allows for sliding or gliding motions between the bones, such
as the intercarpal joints in the wrist. (kumar, 2021)
