Social institution - a major building block of society, which functions according to widely accepted customs, rules or regulations. The family, the education system, the legal system and social services are all social institutions Values - principles and standards that guide our behavior. Values help define our priorities and inform what we think is important in life and society Socialization - the process of learning the usual ways of behaving in society Culture - values, beliefs, language, rituals, customs and rules associated with a particular society or social group, and seen as normal Primary socialization - early socialization that normally takes place within the family Secondary socialization - socialization that takes place in social settings beyond the family, such as in nursery, in friendship groups or in a wide range of other institutions Norms - rules or guidelines that govern how we behave in society or in groups within society Deviant - an individual who does not conform to the norms of a society or social group social role - expectations about the way an individual acts and behaves that are linked to their position in society, for example being a child, a parent, a lawyer, a nurse or a politician Social stratification - a term (borrowed from geology) describing hierarchies in society, where some groups have more status and prestige than other groups Social class - describes a person’s social and economic standing in society Social mobility - the process of moving from one social stratum (level) to another. Social mobility can be upward or downward Gender - refers to the social or cultural expectations of men and women in society as contrasted with the biological, sexual or physical differences between men and women Morbidity rate - rates of illness or disease in a particular population
