,Week 1 college 1
Why bio-based material?
Is a material derived from the living organism like feedstock including corn, sugarcane, organic
polymers which can be degraded (afgebroken) in the environment in one year!

,Week 2 College 1 composites
Natural fiber composites
Natural fibers
- Bamboo, coconut, jute, hemp, grass, sisal fibers
- Natural fibers composites (NFC) are applied in automotive industry (e.g. dashboards) as
renewable resources.
- Major problems are the fiber quality and sensitivity to humidity

What are composites?
Composite means: made up of several parts
- Composites are a combination of 2 or more materials
- Usually stiff reinforcement and a binder material (matrix)

Relevance of design:
- Properties are better than original materials: 1+1=3
- Properties can be fine-tuned in different directions

Whay using compsites?
Traditional composites (glass or carbon fiber laminates)
- High strength and stiffness (stijfheid/ mate waarin object weerstand bidet aan vervorming als
reactie op een uitgeoefende kracht).
- Low weight
- Tailored design
- Good fatigue life
- High dimentional stabilty
- Good corrosion resistance

Natural material composites (focus of this course)
- Reduction of material waste streams
- More sustainable products

3

, - Possibility to make biodegradable or edible products
- Product has better properties than its components.
