In 1985, Gorbachev came to power in the Soviet Union. At that time, the standard
of living was falling compared with countries in the West. The new leader wanted to
reform the economy and create a more open society, and therefore introduced the
famous policies of glasnost’ and perestroika.
Some historians say that the collapse of the USSR was caused by Gorbachev’s
economic policy.
However, Gorbachev himself disagreed. He said that the enormous explosion at
the Chernobyl nuclear power station in 1986, and the government’s reaction to the
disaster, were the real reason for the country’s collapse five years later.
