ASSIGNMENT 02 UNIQUE NUMBER: 800071 DUE DATE: 27/03/2024
This assignment consists of two parts. Ensure that your student number, module code
and anti-plagiarism declaration appear on the cover page. This assignment contributes
75% to your year mark.
PART ONE:
According to Lui et al. (2016): “Urbanization results in habitat loss and habitat fragmentation
concurrently, both influencing biodiversity and ecological processes.” Write an essay that
critically examines the anticipated effects of human activities on the environment in the African
region through urbanisation (in Africa), with specific focus on the following aspects:
• Habitat loss and destruction
• Pollution associated with urban environments
The length of the essay must be between 1 000 and 1 500 words. You need to ensure that
you have referenced at least seven (7) academic sources. Mark allocation for Part One: 24

PART TWO:
The Impact of Urbanization on the Environment in Africa: A Critical Examination
Urbanization, a significant global phenomenon, is particularly pronounced in the African region,
where rapid population growth and migration to cities are reshaping landscapes and altering
ecosystems. As highlighted by Lui et al. (2016), urbanization leads to habitat loss and
fragmentation, exerting profound impacts on biodiversity and ecological processes. This essay
critically examines the anticipated effects of human activities associated with urbanization on
the African environment, focusing on habitat loss and destruction, as well as pollution in urban
environments.
Urbanization in Africa often involves the conversion of natural habitats into built-up areas,
leading to habitat loss and destruction at an alarming rate. The expansion of cities necessitates
clearing of forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems to accommodate infrastructure, residential,
and commercial developments. This process results in the loss of crucial habitats for various
species, including endemic and endangered ones.
When cities grow in Africa, it's not just the habitats and the air that are affected. Something
called "ecosystem services" also gets messed up. These services are like the goodies we get
from nature, such as food, clean water, and wood. They also include things like controlling the
climate, preventing floods, and keeping diseases in check. People also get cultural benefits
