Third Variable Problem -must control other variables of study to identify causality to prevent other possible causal explanations - survey's do not do a very good job of allowing researchers to control other variables -BUT a "Partial Correlation" refers to a more sophisticated survey design (paired with statistical analysis) where researchers try to predict other possible variables -- identify what third variable could be causing the relationships and better understand if the third variable is having an impact allowing researchers to get closer to identifying a causal relationship but still not as rigorous or strong as an experimental design (sampling) confederates someone who is an accomplice or assistant to facilitate the study --pretend to be a participant while others don't know they are actually part of the study - usually instructed to do something for manipulation
