The word the Gambia is A corruption of the Mandingo word “Kambiya" which means the land of Kambi. The Gambia gain independence from Great Britain in 1965 and five years later it becomes a republic. Previously known as the British Gambia, the Gambia was one of the major slave ports in West Africa and the country is the Birthplace of the legendary slave Kunta Kinte whose life was immortalised in the book and film series Roots wrote by one of his descendant Alex Haley. Another notable former slave from the Gambia was the poetess Phillis Wheatley. The Gambia's Economy is heavily relied on Tourism, with Year-round sunshine and proximately 6 hours flight from any European country, The Gambia is a tourist Hot spot.
