FS 466.001 LEGISLATIVE PURPOSE - ANSWER That every dentist and dental hygienist practicing in Florida meets the minimum requirements for safe practice with undue clinical interference by persons not licensed under this chapter. Dentists and dental hygienists who fall below minimum competency or who otherwise present a danger to the public shall be prohibited from practicing within the state. FS 466.002/456.024 EXEMPTIONS - ANSWER -Physicians and surgeons licensed in Florida involved with surgical procedures of the oral cavity; -Qualified anesthetist administering anesthesia under the direct supervision of licensed dentist; -Official duties in Armed Forces/Veterans Affairs/Public Health; -Clinicians at meetings or dental organizations approved by the Board; -Dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students working under supervision as part of a school's curriculum; -Instructors in Florida schools of dentistry, dental hygiene and dental assisting performing regularly assigned duties in a curriculum. (Must have teaching permit) May not practice outside the scope of the school environment. Dentist - ANSWER Person licensed to practice dentistry pursuant to this chapter of the Florida Statutes Dentistry - ANSWER Healing art which is concerned with the examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and care of conditions within the human oral cavity and its adjacent tissues and structures. Dental hygienist - ANSWER -Person licensed to practice dental hygiene pursuant to this chapter of the Florida Statutes -Person who renders educational, preventive, and therapeutic dental services as well as extra-oral procedures required in the performance of such services pursuant to FS. 466.023/466.024 Dental Assistant - ANSWER Person other than a dental hygienist, who under the supervision and authority of a licensed dentist, provides dental care services directly to the patient. Direct supervision - ANSWER a licensed dentist examines the patient, diagnoses the condition to be treated, authorizes the procedure, remains on the premises while procedures are being performed and approves the work before dismissal of the patient. Indirect supervision - ANSWER a licensed dentist examines the patient, authorizes the procedures to be done and remains on the premises while the procedures are being performed.
