P3 - Explain factors that may influncu commlnicaton inturpursonal inturactons in
hualth and social caru unvironmunts
Langlagu nuuds/prufuruncus
Language preferences can infuence communicaton and interpersonal interactons. People have many diferent
language preferences, such as having a preferred frst language. This can be a problem as people who do not have
English as a frst language, may fnd it hard to understand what is being said to them. Also, Communicaton may be
received but not understood due to patents using slang when communicatng as this may be the norm in their culture.
However, the problem with using slang is that it is not proper English so not everyone would understand it. Also, slang is
not appropriate to use in some situatons, it is mainly used in informal situatons such as when you are talking to your
friends or family. However, when it comes to formal situatons such as speaking to a nurse, it may not be appropriate as
the other person may view you as uneducated or may not understand what you are saying if they do not use slang
themselves. Furthermore, some professionals may use jargon when speaking to a patent. Jargon is specialist words used
by a certain group of people, that others fnd diicult to understand. For example, doctors use medical jargon such as
conjunctvits or cornea, which someone who is not a doctor would not understand. If a doctor was the use these words
when talking to a patent, communicaton would not be understood. Not responding to the language preferences of
patents is a serious problem in health and social, as there would be a lack of understanding.

Sunsory impairmunt and disability
Sensory impairment and disability can infuence communicaton and interpersonal interactons. Sensory impairment
means that someone's senses do not work efectvely or might not work at all. The most common sensory impairments
are sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste and spatal awareness. All of these impairments can make communicaton less
efectve, or make it impossible if the people communicatng have no method of communicaton that they can both use.
This is known as communicaton disability, which is when someone communicates using a diferent method. For
example, if a deaf person's preferred method of communicaton is sign language, and the person they are
communicatng with cannot understand sign language they would not be able to communicate. An example in a health
and social care setng would be, a patent at a hospital who has an eye sensory impairment meaning they are unable to
see. The hospital should ensure that the nurse/doctor that is helping the patent should describe anything that the
patent cannot see, so that the patent is aware of what's going on around them and will be able to communicate more
efectvely. For example, if there is any paperwork that the patent needs to sign, they will not be able to see what it
says. Therefore, a member of staf should read it out to them and show them where to sign to avoid any
misunderstandings. Not understanding sensory impairments or disabilites is a language barrier, as it can stop
informaton being received by the other person.

Pursonality disordurs, sulf-ustuum, anxiuty and duprussion
Emotonal or psychological issues can infuence communicaton and interpersonal interactons, for both the patent and
care worker. Emotonal or psychological issues include; personality disorders, self-esteem problems, anxiety or
depression. Not everyone has the confdence to engage in interpersonal interactons, people with anxiety may be unable
to deal with the stress of talking to others, so they may get away from that stressful situaton or may not be able to
communicate efectvely. It would be especially diicult for someone with social anxiety, as they would feel like they are
being judged negatvely, which would lower their self-esteem. Sometmes social workers create their own
communicaton barriers, if the needs of their patents are too emotonally hard for them. They may block out what the
patent is saying to avoid painful experiences, or they may not be able to empathise with the patent due to their
