EVOLUTION
, THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION
Evolution is a scientific theory, as it is based on a series of hypotheses
that have been tested and verified over time
HYPOTHESIS:
A proposed solution to a problem / an explanation of a scientific phenomenon that is
based on scientific evidence. It is tested by observations / experiments and the
results make it accepted or rejected
THEORY:
An explanation or hypothesis that is supported by evidence. It is developed and
changed / replaced as new evidence is discovered (it is not static)
EVOLUTION BY NATURAL SELECTION
Evolution:
- Change over time
- This change occurs in chemicals, matter, solar system, languages ect.
Biological evolution:
- Genetic changes in a population that are inherited over successive
generations due to natural selection. Resulting in the formation of new
species.
1. Macro-evolution
- New species develop from existing species over time
- Speciation forms the basis of macro-evolution.
2. Micro-evolution
- Variation that occurs within a species
- Small changes originate in the gene pool. Results in small
changes in the genotype of the species
- These changes are passed onto offspring
