Scenario
The next step whilst on your work placement is to shadow a physiotherapist as they are working pitch side
for a rugby team, you will follow up treatment from pitch side into the next clinic session. You must be clear
on each of the 4 injuries you will be treatng and produce a treatment card for each of the conditons
relatng the informaton to both pitch side and in the follow up sessions.
Task 3
(P5) Describe frst aid and common treatment methods that are used to treat 4 different typees oD
speorts injuries
- Types of sports injuries (i.e acute injuries caused by a sudden trauma. E.g tackle, being hit by
the ball results in immediate pain, swelling, loss of function) or (chronic/ overuse injuries result
from continuous stress e.g Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, tennis elbow) or (Soft tissue injuries
e.g sprains/ strains- tendonitis, tennis elbow, golfers elbowshin splints) or (Contusions/ fractures
e.g open or closed) or (Concussion)
You need to pick 4 common injuries MUST include acute
- First aid (i.e Emergency/ immediate treatment e.g priorities, resuscitation, shock, bleeding,
unconscious. Casualty, summon qualified assistance, accident report forms, emergency action
plans
- Common treatments (e.g PRICER (protect, rest, ice, compression, elevation and rehabilitation)
SALTAPS, Taping/ bandaging/splints, hot/cold treatment, electrotherapy (ultrasound, laser, TENs),
medical referral for specialist help
If you have a first aid certificate this can be used to support P5
