What is precipitation? - water from Earths atmosphere down the Earths surface in the form of rain, snow, hail and sleet. What is infiltration? - water enters into the soil What is interception? - water is caught by plants/trees What is stem flow? - water lands on plants and run downs their stems What is overland flow? - water flows over land surface What is through flow? - movement of water down through the soil What is transpiration? - water vapor comes out leaves What is evapotranspiration? - water rises as vapor from the ground and released from leaves What is groundwater? - water stored deep in the ground What is soil water? - water held between soil particles What is groundwater flow? - water flows through the ground/rock What is percolation? - water enters permeable rock What is surface storage? - water in lakes, ponds and puddles What is groundwater storage? - water stored underground in bed rock What are flows/transfers? - link between one store/component to another What is an input? - add something to the system What is an output? - removing something from the system What is an isolated system? - Has no interactions with anything outside of the system boundary. There is no input or output of energy or matter.
