Stage 1 Biology Defence System and DNA L Notes
Topic One: Defence (immune) system
Barriers to Infection
First Line of Defence
- Physical and chemical barriers which prevent pathogens entering the body
1. Skin
2. Mucous Membranes
3. Secretions
4. Acid
Second line of Defence
- The bodies innate non-specific immune response
1. Phagocytes
• Types of white blood cells
2. Inflammation
• Damage to a tissue by a physical injury triggers a localised inflammatory response
• Effect of Inflammatory Response:
The tissues go red and warm due to large amount of blood reaching the site
Third Line of Defence
- Acquired specific immune responses.
