P3 Unit 39 Health and Social Care

P3 – Demostrate standard precautions that would be used to
prevent the spread of infection in a health or social care
setting:

Disposable
cap

Blue plaster

1. In order to work in the health and social care setting it is important
to wear a disposable hair cap. This acts as barrier to prevent the
spread of the infection which could be transported from your hair
and onto other people.
2. It is also important to wear plastic gloves to prevent the spread of
infection which could be transported to and from your hands. It is
important to keep your hand sterilised to stop the infections from
reaching other people around you. This is very important as people
in the health and social care settings are dealing with people who
have different infections and diseases. The gloves would protect
you from getting the disease/infection yourself.
3. It is very important to wear blue plasters, they are there to close
any open wounds and prevent infections from getting into them as
one of the ways in which the infections could be spread is through
blood.
4. The shoe covers are used to prevent the spread of microbes from
your shoes. This is important as when you work in the health and
social care setting the carers and nurses tend to walk around those
who are sick and infected with different diseases. This would also
stop the new microbes from coming into and out of the area where
the patients are held e.g. hospitals, care homes, help centres and
more.
5. It is extremely important to wear a disposable plastic apron which
is required to protect your clothes from getting microbes on them.
They are used to stop the spread of infection out of the area with
infected people and into the area. This will keep you protected
from the microbes and could result in yourself get ill.
