The biological perspective
This perspective is concerned with how the biology within our body can affect us. This
can include our genes and the biological environment influences that we are exposed
to.
Arnold Gesell developed on the maturational theory. This is a theory that states that a
person's development is due to the nature in our bodies due to biology rather than
nurture. It states how the effects of the environment are minimal compared to the effects
from biology. The information that is passed down from our parents is called DNA, this
will influence cognitive, physical and other development overtime. It also provides the
evidence of how development is due to nature rather than nurture. This contrasts with
the humanistic theory where the effects of nurture us essential in order to develop.
Genetic inheritance can affect the way in which someone behaves in many ways. Some
disorders are caused by a single dominant gene, which either parent can pass onto the
child. However, there are some genetic disorders that are passed through the genes of
both parents.
Genetic disorders such as huntington's disease are inherited disorders that are certain
to develop the disease regardless of any environmental factors. However, there are
some genetic disorders that can be proud on by mutations that can either occur
randomly or due to the environment. An example of this is that even if twins are identical
it does not necessarily mean that they will suffer from the same illnesses/diseases as
the environment can affect an illness and could develop something such as rheumatoid
arthritis.
Gesell developed an assessment scale to allow practitioners to assess if a child’s
behaviour and understanding matches how old the child is. The age in which this takes
place is either 2 and a half to 6 years old, 4 to 6 years old and 6 to 9 years old. It
measures a child’s ability to use perceptual accuracy and skills involving their own
behaviour and emotions by asking them to plan solutions. The score will then allow a
practitioner to make a comparison to their earlier scores to make a decision of whether
their development is normal or if it lacking or succeeding. This will then allow people
such as specialists to identify if that child has developmental problems which is positive
as it makes sure that the child has plans around their learning needs.
Separating health related behaviours as to whether they are nature or nurture can be
difficult. An example of this is if a child is born with the gene of being likely to develop
breast cancer. If, throughout their life they live and follow a healthy lifestyle and attend
