Empowerment in Health and social care

Empowerment in health and social care means patients, carers and
service users are making the choices as a group and taking control of
what happens to them. They are allowed to say how they feel and
are listened to.

There are 6 ways this can be done: adapting activities and the
environment, taking account of the individual, promoting choice,
preferred methods of communication, working in partnership with
others and using positive working practices.

Adapting activities and environments

Adapting activities and environments means that a resident, for
example is given an environment that they are safe and comfortable
in and there are things that they can do that they will enjoy and are
able to participate in. An environment or activity is changed
depending on the particular service user.

Heng can have activities adapted to him whilst he is in nursery. For
example, because he enjoys drawing and is very intelligent the
nursery staff could combine these 2 activities and have him complete
a colouring picture but it will be by numbers. This gives him a chance
to do a hobby that he enjoys whilst also developing his intelligence.
Also, Heng’s environment at the nursery can be adapted. As Heng
can’t speak much English his social development is delayed the
nursery should make a point to help him develop his English or help
him understand what is happening around him. This can be done by
having a member of staff assigned to Heng to help him interact with
other children as well as helping him with his English.

Aleta should have activities and her environment adapted whilst is
hospital. She loves yoga and relaxation activities. The hospital should

, accommodate to this by giving her a room which has a space where
she can set up a mat and do yoga or running classes with other
people in the hospital that does yoga. This will make her feel more
involved in the hospital community. Aleta could also have a nurse
assigned to her who knows some basic sign language. This is so that
Aleta, who is deaf, can communicate with the hospital so that they
are aware of her needs. She could also have her boyfriend stay with
her in hospital so that he can translate for her.

Taking account of the individual

Taking account of the individual means you are making sure that any
needs that they have are met, like dietary or religious requirements.
This means that the carer doesn’t neglect the resident and the
residents stay is like being at home so makes them feel comfortable.

Heng can be empowered at nursery as they can take into
consideration his enjoyment in creative activities, such as allowing
him to colour if he wants to. This will give him the freedom to do
what he wants, and he will be more likely to enjoy his time there.
The nursery should acknowledge that Heng is Chinese. This means
that they should provide the appropriate care in order to keep up
with any requirements that come as a result of that such diet or
festivals like Chinese New Year.

Aleta is a vegetarian. This means that the hospital would have to
provide a suitable alternative to any foods that they serve that aren’t
vegetarian. Doing this ensures that she can maintain her lifestyle in
hospital. Aleta is also from Sweden. This means that the hospital
should consider any particular needs that cine with that such as
religion.
