Unit 33 - P1

Kojar Ahmed

Any business that wishes to stand the test of time and operate during times of economic difficulty
should consider the use of the internet. The use of the internet and other similar technology can be a
great way for business to operate outside of their normal ventures, this is usually because businesses
that advertise themselves and their products through the internet are likely to be more successfully
both financially and in terms of brand recognition. In this leaflet, I will be demonstrating and stating
the advantages and disadvantages of using the internet and other similar methods, I will also touch
upon how the internet operates and other subcategories such as internet service providers, servers
and domain names.

The internet has been widely used by larger businesses to advertise their goods and services as it is
one of the easiest and cheapest ways to do so, although this is only cheap for them due to their
substantial profits and the benefits that come from having a website, therefore much smaller
businesses should consider cost as a factor when deciding whether or not to implement internet
services in their business. The costs included with implementing a website could include things such
as domain names, servers, Wi-fi and internet service providers, as well as the cost of hiring skilled
employees who can not only set up but also maintain the website.

One of the key building blocks to having a website is its servers and clients. A server is a service
which can be lent to or bought by a company, this service works by allowing a business to essentially
'store' the website in their server, the 'client' such as customers or the business itself can then access
the website by requesting the information from the servers via an internet browser. An advantage to
having a working server is that it allows more customers to access your website all at once, however
if the business increases in popularity then the website traffic could increase significantly which
would require the purchase of more servers, this could be a potential disadvantage.

Another aspect of implementing a website for a business is its internet service provider. An internet
service provider is a business such as Virgin Media or TalkTalk that provides internet access for
businesses and households. The ISPs provide an internet connection which will allow businesses and
households to access functions such as the World Wide Web. Depending on the business a company
wishes to use and the internet speed they require, the prices may fluctuate. The ISPs sell their
internet services based on the amount of Mbs per second, ranging from around 20Mbs per second to
100Mbs per second, as well as fibre optic options which provide super-fast download and upload
speeds. To run and maintain a website, a business may not require a connection higher than 100Mbs,
although this could change depending on the popularity of the business. The prices for these
connections can be from around £25 to £50 a month but business also have the option to purchase
packages that provide them with internet access in multiple places. An advantage to having a higher
Mbs per second download speed is that businesses which specialise with computers or electronics
can better demonstrate their products.

Lastly, any business with a website will also require a domain name, this is usually not too hard to do
if a business already has a unique business name that they wish to advertise themselves with. Once
this has been established it is only a matter confirming that the domain name is not already being
used and then purchasing the domain and registering it. Domain names are not particularly
expensive and can be free in some circumstances depending on what service the business is using.
