Receptors:
Sensory receptors:
o Specialised cells that can detect changes in our
surroundings.
o They are specific to a single type of stimulus.
o They are energy transducers – they convert one form of
energy to electrical energy.
Receptor Location Sense Energy Form “Transduced”
to Electrical
Rods/Cones Retina Sight Light
Taste Buds Tongue Taste Chemical Potential
Olfactory Cells Nose Smell Chemical Potential
Pacinian Corpuscles Skin Touch Movement & Pressure
Meissner’s Corpuscles Skin Touch Movement & Pressure
Ruffini’s Endings Skin Temperature Heat
Proprioceptors Muscles Placement of Limbs Mechanical Displacement
(Body Awareness) (Stretching).
Hair Cells in Semi- Ear Balance Movement
circular Canals
Hair Cells in Cochlea Ear Hearing Sound
The Pacinian Corpuscle:
o Mechanoreceptor found in the skin.
o Detects mechanical stimuli (pressure).
o The end of the sensory neurone is found in the centre of
the corpuscle.
o It is surrounded by layers of connective tissue called
lamellae.
o Each layer is separated by a layer of gel.
